Dental Aesthetics

In modern society, dental aesthetics has become an increasingly important need, leading patients to seek not only a healthy mouth but also a beautiful one. Today, more than ever, the dentist plays a role not just as a medical professional responsible for oral health, but also as a specialist in the aesthetics of the smile.

Until not long ago, patients would visit the dentist mainly due to pain or issues related to chewing function. As mentioned, achieving a white and radiant smile is now a more recent reason why patients seek dental care. The services a dentist can offer in the field of aesthetics are numerous:

  • aesthetic fillings;

  • dental veneers;

  • teeth alignment using invisible braces with digital technology;

  • teeth whitening;

  • treatment of severe malocclusions with the help of maxillofacial surgery;

  • periodontal surgery to reduce gum exposure when smiling;

  • aesthetic medicine for the perioral tissues.

The most common cosmetic dentistry treatments are: aesthetic fillings, teeth whitening, and dental veneers.

Aesthetic fillings

The front teeth are certainly those that have the greatest impact on the aesthetics of a smile. Improving the shape, size, and color of the teeth can be done using sophisticated fillings, where in just one session the smile can be completely transformed. In this case, the dentist applies layers of resin in a specific way to restore dental aesthetics.

Another common aesthetic application of conservative dentistry is the replacement of dental amalgams, the classic "silver fillings" that were widely used in the past. Even if they are still functionally intact, patients may request their replacement for aesthetic reasons. Today, thanks to better performance and equal durability, the use of white composite materials is definitely considered the gold standard.

Dental Whitening Padua

Teeth whitening treatments are used to make teeth whiter and more radiant. A substance called carbamide peroxide is applied directly to the teeth, leading to their whitening.

There are mainly two types of whitening methods: at-home and in-office (chairside) whitening.

As the name suggests, at-home whitening is done by the patient at home, using one or two trays (upper and lower) provided by the dentist. The whitening gel is applied to these trays and worn overnight, following the schedule prescribed by the dentist. Results are often noticeable after just a few days. By maintaining proper oral hygiene and healthy habits (such as avoiding smoking, excessive coffee, etc.), the results can last a long time.

In any case, at our clinic, we always provide more gel than is needed for the first whitening session, so that by storing the extra gel in the refrigerator, the patient can perform touch-up treatments over time to always keep a dazzling smile.

In-office whitening is performed directly at the clinic, usually over 2 sessions, and with the aid of a special lamp.

In our experience, the first type of whitening (at-home) provides more predictable results and is generally the one we prefer to recommend to patients.

In both cases, however, a thorough dental examination is always necessary to determine whether the patient is a good candidate for teeth whitening.

Some important contraindications to whitening include:

  • pre-existing tooth sensitivity;

  • excessive exposure of tooth roots due to gum recession;

  • presence of crowns or veneers on the front teeth, unless they are to be replaced after the whitening treatment. Whitening teeth next to prosthetic restorations can lead to an aesthetic issue, as natural teeth may become whiter while crowns and veneers remain the same color, highlighting the difference;

  • teeth with fillings, unless the fillings will be replaced after whitening.

Another type of whitening is internal whitening. This is generally used for teeth that have undergone root canal treatment and have darkened in color. This type of whitening can only be performed by a dentist, as it involves creating a small opening inside the tooth, where a whitening gel is applied 2–3 times over the course of about 10 days.

Dental Veneers in Padua

Dental veneers are thin shells or small ceramic laminates that are bonded to the surface of the teeth, primarily for aesthetic purposes. They are about 0.5 to 0.7 mm thick and can dramatically transform a smile, making it appear brighter, whiter, and cleaner.

Although the results achieved with veneers are truly remarkable, thanks to well-defined protocols, only 4 sessions are needed, meaning very little time is required to achieve the smile you've always wanted. As we've often emphasized, this is also made possible by the use of digital techniques.

  • First session: Data collection
    The first appointment is dedicated to collecting photos, X-rays, and taking digital impressions using an intraoral scanner. These are then processed digitally with special software to adjust the color, shape, and size of the teeth.
  • Second session: The so-called “mock-up”
    Based on our digital plan, and without altering the natural teeth in any way, temporary resin veneers are applied. This allows the patient, our main partner in the aesthetic decision-making process, to preview the final result. At this stage, the shape of the veneers can be adjusted if needed.
  • Third session:
    The teeth are prepared to accommodate the very thin veneers. New digital impressions are taken using the intraoral scanner, and resin prototypes of the veneers are then temporarily bonded in place.
  • Fourth session:
    About a week to ten days later, in the final session, the resin prototypes are removed and the new ceramic veneers are permanently bonded to the teeth.

Dental Veneers or Teeth Whitening?

Veneers or Teeth Whitening?
Not sure which treatment to choose? Here's a summary of the main features:

  • Whitening: offers excellent aesthetic results, but they are temporary and require attention to diet and certain habits (e.g., smoking);
    Veneers: the shine and color of veneers remain stable over time and do not require special maintenance, just standard oral hygiene with a toothbrush and dental floss.

Both teeth whitening and the application of veneers are performed mainly for aesthetic reasons. To give you an idea: if a patient has healthy and well-aligned teeth and simply wants to enhance their smile, we typically recommend classic teeth whitening, as the only goal is to brighten the enamel.

So when do we lean toward veneers instead?

  • To change the color of teeth affected by old fillings or root canal treatments, achieving a permanent and even whitening result;

  • To modify the shape of the teeth, for example, in cases where teeth are naturally small, affecting the overall appearance of the smile;

  • In cases of mild crowding, if the patient doesn’t want to undergo orthodontic treatment, veneers can still help align the teeth;

  • To close gaps between teeth, known as diastemas, again, without the need for braces.
