Pedodontics in Padua
Pediatric Dentist in Padua
Just as there are pediatricians for children, there is also a dentist for children, called a Pedodontist. The pedodontist plays a very important role within the dental clinic because they introduce young patients to the dental environment.
We all know that for a child or adolescent (just like for an adult!), going to the dentist may not be a comfortable experience. This is because dental treatments are often associated with discomfort or pain. In reality, with modern dental practices and a playful, relaxed approach, even the most hesitant young patients can be successfully engaged.
There are many important reasons to begin dental visits during childhood:
For oral health: Caring for baby teeth should not be neglected. Beyond causing real discomfort and pain (such as an abscess), poor care can also affect the health and eruption of permanent teeth. A very common example: the premature loss of one or more baby teeth due to multiple cavities can lead to the early eruption of permanent teeth. This can result in malocclusions in the permanent dentition, which can later be corrected through orthodontics or invisible aligners.
For psychological reasons: Introducing a child to the dentist at an early age (around 4–5 years old) and following them through their growth helps them become accustomed to dental visits and prevents them from seeing the dental office as a hostile place. Often, fear is already ingrained in young patients because they have picked it up from their surroundings, such as school, friends, or family members.
For financial reasons: Prevention generally costs less than treating a complex case that could have been more easily managed if addressed early.

Prevention is the main treatment in pediatric dentistry
The main types of treatments carried out during childhood include:
Education for proper oral hygiene;
Professional cleaning and, if needed, fluoride application;
Sealants: A protective coating is applied to the permanent molars around the age of 6–7 to greatly reduce the risk of cavities in the permanent molars;
Early detection of possible malocclusions that may become much harder to treat at a later age. The most common example is a narrow palate, which is easily correctable in childhood but becomes increasingly difficult to treat as the child grows.
